At Imaginary Pixels, we built our studio on a simple belief: ambitious visual effects should be accessible to filmmakers at every scale, not just those backed by giant studios. We work internationally and collaborate closely with independent directors across the U.S., helping them bring visually rich, emotionally grounded stories to the screen without compromising their creative vision.

In recent years we have had the privilege of working on films like Vincent Grashaw’s Keep Quiet, his latest project Bruton, and Ali Scher’s Popular Theory. Each collaboration reflects what we value most as a VFX partner: flexibility, trust, and a shared commitment to storytelling.

Our Approach: Story First, Shot List Second

We see ourselves as an extension of the directors and storytellers we work with. Instead of chasing volume, we choose a selective slate of projects each year and focus on delivering VFX that blend seamlessly into the film.

Here is what defines our process:

  • We get involved early, often at the script stage, to help design effects that support the narrative.
  • We use indie-friendly workflows that are fast, flexible, and remote-ready.
  • Our specialty is invisible VFX that serve cinematography and character, not spectacle.

For independent productions working with tight schedules and resources, this philosophy ensures that visual effects enhance the film rather than disrupt it.

Returning Collaborator: Vincent Grashaw

One of the most rewarding parts of our journey has been our ongoing collaboration with director Vincent Grashaw. We first worked together on his crime drama Keep Quiet, and his decision to return for Bruton has been a meaningful affirmation of our shared creative approach.

On Keep Quiet

Keep Quiet is set on a rural Indigenous reservation and follows a tribal police officer and his new trainee as they pursue a dangerous fugitive. Because of the film’s gritty, grounded tone, our job was to stay invisible while supporting some of the story’s most intense moments.

For this project, our main VFX work focused on enhancing injuries – including several extremely brutal and practical effects that needed careful digital augmentation to feel believable and impactful. We also created muzzle flashes for action scenes and delivered a range of FX elements such as fire, all integrated to match the film’s aesthetic.

These effects needed to feel painfully real without ever distracting from the performances, and we approached each shot with that balance in mind.

Vincent Grashaw Returns for Bruton

After the successful collaboration on Keep Quiet, director Vincent Grashaw returned to Imaginary Pixels for his new film, Bruton. This continued partnership highlights the studio’s value not just as a vendor but as an evolving creative ally.

For Bruton, Imaginary Pixels again provides a blend of invisible VFX craftsmanship and world-building support. Whether the task involves environmental work, storytelling-enhancing clean-up, subtle atmospheric adjustments or complex FX simulations, the studio ensures that every effect reinforces the film’s tone and emotional undercurrents.

Grashaw’s decision to return underscores a core mission of Imaginary Pixels: building a lasting relationships with directors.

With Ali Scher on Popular Theory: Playful Science

While our work with Vincent leans into realism, Popular Theory allowed us to explore a brighter and more stylized palette. The film centers on Erwin, a young science prodigy who teams up with a fellow genius to create a chemical that disrupts high-school social dynamics.

We contributed:

  • Augmented practical experiments with FX
  • Look-based VFX and transitions that support the film’s upbeat rhythm
  • Range of invisible effects

The goal was to make the scientific world feel lively and expressive without overshadowing the characters.

How We Work With Indie Directors

Across all our collaborations, a few principles guide us:

  1. Story first
We start by understanding the emotional and narrative needs of the film before thinking about individual shots.
  2. Designing for the budget you actually have
We help filmmakers maximize their resources with a mix of essential hero shots and subtle enhancements.
  3. A streamlined, remote-friendly process
Our review tools allow directors to give clear, time-efficient feedback from anywhere.
  4. Respect for what is captured on set
We believe in enhancing practical filmmaking, not replacing it.

Looking Ahead

From the grounded landscapes of Keep Quiet to the energetic world of Popular Theory and our continued partnership on Bruton, we are proud of the relationships we have built with independent filmmakers who share our passion for story-driven visuals.

If you are an independent director or producer looking for a VFX partner who values narrative as much as technique, we would be excited to collaborate with you.
